Another Win Undermined

Well, the Brits, in cooperation with the US, have scored a major victory for the War on Islamic Radicals. While it's nothing to dance in the streets over for sure, it's definitely an accomplishment. Victories like this are why there have been no more attacks in the US since we were attacked on September 11th, 2001.But of course, nothing good can happen without it being Bush's fault somehow.

Quotes from John Aravosis and followed by responses on his blog (Thanks Dean Barnett (on Hugh Hewitt's Blog) who thanked Mary Katherine Ham.

Bush just invoked a Code Red terrorist emergency, our first ever.

And isn't it q**er(stars mine) that the emergency is declared within a day of Republican party leader Ken Mehlman launching an all-out offensive against Democrats following Joe Lieberman's loss in Connecticut, an offensive in which Mehlman, the White House and Republican operatives are claiming that Democrats no longer care about national security or the war on terror…

Do I sound as if I don't believe this alert? Why, yes, that would be correct. I just don't believe it…

Bottom line: Joe Lieberbush lost. The message is spreading across the land that incumbents who embrace the president are in serious trouble. And the Republicans needed to divert attention, to stop this meme in its tracks, and lo' and behold we have our first terror alert that I can recall since the last election, and it's our first ever Red Alert! What a coincidence!

Check out the quotes section for that post, and you will see there are many nutroots right behind him.

Some day soon, people will wake up and realize the danger we are facing. I just hope it doesn't take us failing to defend them to do it.

Another Stupid Tax

From the Americans for Tax Reform website:

Americans for Tax Reform strongly supports S. 1321, repealing the Spanish-American War tax on telephones. The bill would end the 107-year-old tax on talking, enacted to fund the Spanish-American War. In 1898, Congress enacted a “temporary” tax on telephones to fund the American war effort to free Cuba from Spanish rule. Since only the wealthiest Americans had telephones in 1898, the tax was sold to the American people as a luxury tax. However, in 2005 there are more telephones in America than people, and the tax has become highly regressive, affecting low income and minority households especially. The tax does not fund any specific purpose, as some erroneously claim, but instead goes into the general fund. In 2000, the House passed legislation repealing the tax by an overwhelming 420-2 and both houses of Congress passed appropriations legislation including repeal the same year, but the bill was ultimately vetoed by then President Bill Clinton.

and second article:

WASHINGTON – The Senate Finance Committee Wednesday approved legislation to end the 3 percent federal tax on telecommunications. The legislation, S. 1321, sponsored by Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) will now be placed on the calendar for action by the full Senate.

While the Spanish-American War tax was originally billed as a temporary, luxury tax in1898, when only the wealthiest Americans had phones, the telephone is now a ubiquitous part of American life. The tax is therefore highly regressive, as it represents a greater share of the income of poorer Americans.

“I applaud the Senate Finance Committee for moving forward on doing away with this antiquated and unpopular tax,” said taxpayer advocate Grover Norquist. “I encourage the House Ways and Means Committee to follow suit so that we can give Americans another tax cut this year.”

S. 1321 currently has 17 cosponsors in the Senate. Similar legislation in the House, H.R. 1898, sponsored by Rep. Gary Miller (R-CA), has 200 cosponsors.

Need I really say anything? I mean wow....

A Multiple Issue Simple Solution

I have a solution to gay marriage, government spending (big government in general), the IRS, and creating a strong economy. Well, ok, it's not my  solution. It's a bill in congress right now, submitted by Congressman Linder (R-GA) and has numerous cosponsors in both the House and Senate, and is being trumpeted most loudly by nationally syndicated radio talk show host Neal Boortz. It's called the Fair Tax.

A quick and dirty explanation of what the Fair Tax is:
The Fair Tax is a single-rate, federal retail sales tax collected only once, at the final point of purchase of new goods and services for personal consumption. Used items are not taxed. Business-to-business purchases for the production of goods and services are not taxed. A rebate makes the effective rate progressive
    - www.fairtax.org

Essentially, remove all federal taxes of all kinds. No capital gains, no FICA, no Social Security, no death tax. Now replace these taxes with a retail sales tax at the point of sale to the consumer. The rate (about 23%) has been calculated to be revenue neutral, meaning that you will experience no lessening in your buying power, but no gain either.

The benefits of this plan are that you can save and invest with no penalty. You know exactly how much tax you are paying, and you no longer have to fill out tax returns. The IRS will be all but eliminated, and the tax code abolished. A pre-bate will be issued to handle traditionally nontaxable items monthly, and the lowest income citizens will be offered even more financial help from the government. I encourage you to read more on this plan or post questions and I will do my best to address them.

You are probably wondering how this has anything to do with gay marriage. One of the supreme benefits of marriage is the tax incentives. Why should our federal government be involved at all in marriage? Isn't marriage first and foremost a religious ceremony? If we pass the Fair Tax, we no longer have a need (or a place) for tax incentives of any kind, including marriage. Marriage needs to be placed back in the church, synagogue, mosque, temple, etc. The government has no reason to be involved in the private lives of it's citizens unless a crime has been committed. gay marriage? If you find a church (etc.) willing to marry you, you're married. Yes marriage has become a status symbol, but at it's heart it is a link between two people in the eyes of God, and only God should be involved. The only case where government should be involved is in the case of divorce, in which case a judge or arbiter will determine property ownership and child visitation, and that should be handled at the local level.

The other major advantage is the control of government spending. No more lobbying for favorable tax codes, no more pandering. The power is in the hands of the people, who can decide to buy used articles and vote with their dollars.

How many other social issues can this help solve? Fire away.
